{Kauai} Backpacking Kalalau Trail

Day 2 in Kauai started dark and early. I think H & I both woke up around 3am and figured we might as well get up since we couldn't sleep anymore. I don't know if it was the excitement of hiking or beating the heat that gave us that extra push to pack it up quick in Haena and hit the Kalalau Trail.

H & I started hiking at 4:30am with are headlights blazing. I was surprised how familiar things became the more we hiked. Since we had hiked this trail before, I felt pretty confident starting in the dark. I really like hiking in the dark because it forces me focus on the trail, hike faster and bypass the heat of the day that really drains me. After about 4 hours of hiking, we were rewarded with a beautiful morning view of the Na Pali coast with Kalalau Beach in sight. The last few miles flew by with the excitement and anticipation of being in this beautiful place once again.
We arrived at Kalalau Beach pretty early in the morning so we had the rest of the day to just relax and soak in the sights.

Nothing like eating oatmeal and apples at the trailhead parking lot at 4am.

Good morning! Love that golden light.

A look at part of the gorgeous Na Pali coast. Those mountains are so sweet.

This awesome waterfall is the main water source for campers on Kalalau Beach. We filtered our water due to the fact that there are goats above the waterfall and we really didn't want to risk having stomach issues - but - I did see several people drink/fill up right from the waterfall (no filtering), so it's really personal preference.

Our home for the next few days. Pretty epic if you ask me.
