Leave Your Shoes By The Door

St. Nicholas Day, is December 6, which falls early in the traditional holiday season. Where St. Nicholas is prominent, his day, not Christmas, is the primary gift giving day. Parties may be held on the eve, December 5th, and shoes or stockings left for St. Nicholas to fill during the night. Children will find treats of small gifts, fruit or nuts, and special Nicholas candies and cookies. St. Nicholas gifts are meant to be shared, not hoarded for oneself. St. Nicholas is a true giver.

St. Nicholas Day has always been a special tradition in my family. We would put our shoes (or actually my mom's wooden shoes) by the door on the evening of December 5th and if we were good all year long, we would have a sweet treat in our shoe the next morning. I always loved celebrating and having traditions that were not the typical American holidays. Thanks to my mom for bringing her European experiences into my life, I will always cherish them and keep the traditions going.

Happy St. Nicholas Day! (in advance)
