At the beginning of the year, Snowbird Ski & Summer Resort was given a preliminary ‘go ahead’ to build a mountain coaster in Little Cottonwood Canyon. My initial reaction to all of this was (and still is), “ARE YOU KIDDING ME?” “I CAN’T BELIEVE SNOWBIRD WOULD WANT TO DO SOMETHING LIKE THIS.” “THIS IS THE DUMBEST IDEA EVER!” all of which I said out loud.
I think the whole idea of a mountain coaster zipping around, under Mount Superior no less, really makes getting away to the mountains less inviting. Who wants to enjoy the beauty of nature with an amusement ride looming in the foreground? I understand that Snowbird wants to be competitive with other local resorts, but there has to be a better way to generate money than to destroy our canyon’s with a mountain coaster.
Luckily, the SLC Planning Commission is rethinking whether or not to allow Snowbird to build the mountain coaster. The final decision takes place in April. I really hope the efforts from the community and organizations like SAVE OUR CANYONS will help keep this eyesore out of the Wasatch.
Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to make it to the protest that was held last week, but here is what my poster would have said...
COASTER'S BELONG UNDER MY DRINK, NOT IN OUT CANYONS!!!
